What does the PSL scale actually mean?
PSL is a community shorthand for rating facial appearance. It can help explain online vocabulary, but it is not a standardized measurement of attractiveness.
A rating convention, not a universal test
PSL terminology developed in online appearance-rating communities. Many descriptions use a scale from 1 to 8; others use 0–8 or 1–10. There is no governing body that sets a single chart, reference population or scoring procedure.
When someone says “PSL rating” or “PSL score,” they usually mean an impression of facial appearance expressed as a number. The same person may receive different numbers from different raters, communities or photographs.
What about PSL tiers and charts?
Charts often attach slang labels to lower, middle and higher bands. These labels are community vocabulary rather than measured categories of people. Their boundaries vary between charts.
A claimed midpoint is not a measured population average. Similarly, a decimal such as 6.25 does not establish that a rating is precise. We avoid assigning people to those labels.
PSL rating versus facial measurements
A facial measurement can have a reproducible definition: for example, the distance between the inner eye corners divided by the average visible width of both eyes. A PSL rating is a judgment, and that ratio does not automatically determine it.
Our tool requests a subjective AI rating from the photograph and separately reports defined geometric measurements. The AI rating is not calculated from those ratios and is not a percentile against other people.
Why photo setup changes the result
Camera distance, head rotation, expression, lighting and filters can change the visible outline and spacing of features. A close selfie and a portrait from farther away can look different without anything about the person changing.
Use front-facing, evenly lit photos taken under similar conditions when comparing measurements. Avoid drawing conclusions from a single image.
A more useful way to use a face test
Start with a specific question about the photograph: Is the head tilted? How do the visible ratios change with camera position? Can I take a more consistent portrait?
Treat measurements as descriptions of a photo. They do not predict attractiveness, relationships, health or personal value. Our free local scan is an exploratory tool, not an objective PSL assessment.
